Ricardo Anderson “Tommy Teets” Riviere was remanded to HMP Dodds after being accused of arson in The City last week.
The well-known shades salesman, who plies his trade along Bolton Lane, was not required to plead to the charge, that without lawful excuse, he destroyed by fire, a building belonging to OMB Limited on October 19.
Prosecutor Station Sergeant Carrison Henry objected to bail in the District “A” Magistrates’ Court based on the seriousness of the offence. He noted that the accused had a history of antecedents, and many people suffered as a result of the fire. He went on to say that the situation arose out of aggravation, and if granted bail there was a fear for Riviere’s safety.
Attorney Mohia Ma’at, in his submission, said while he was thankful for the prosecution looking out for his client’s safety, the safest place for him was at home. He added that his client faced a sentence of 25 years in prison, a fine of $5 000 or both.
While he noted Riviere had a criminal history dating back to the 1980s, it was as a result of being under the influence of cocaine. He noted the man had rehabilitated himself, and had remained clean for 15 years.
“The reality is that there are many people aggrieved in light of the allegation, especially in these hard economic times . . . . All focus will be on you . . . . The public needs protection; not just you . . . . Your antecedents don’t speak to similar matters but you are well known to the courts, even though I can’t blame you as you said you were hooked on cocaine. I am going to err based on the gravity of the situation,” the magistrate said.
Riviere returns on November 21. (RA)
