After 54 years of being the only free-to-air (FTA) television station on the island, the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation’s CBC TV8 could soon be getting competition.

Minister of Information, Broadcasting and Public Affairs Senator Lucille Moe yesterday announced Government could be issuing more television and radio licences to boost entrepreneurship and lower unemployment numbers in Barbados.

“My ministry is certainly cognisant of the fact the audiovisual sector has a significant foreign exchange-earning capacity and can therefore contribute tremendously in the revival of the economy,” Moe said during the launch of television reality programme the Arawak Cement Home Sweet Home Makeover Show.

“As a result, we are actively considering the issuing of more television and radio licences since broadcasting can provide a viable avenue for employment. This would be in keeping with Government’s policy of decreasing unemployment levels through entrepreneurship,” she added. (AD)
