More than 300 workers were sent packing yesterday as Government continued its retrenchment programme under the Barbados Economic Recovery and Transformation (BERT) plan.

However, 116 workers from the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) are still in the dark over their fate, as talks between that entity and the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) are set to continue into next week.

Acting general secretary of the National Union of Public Workers, Delcia Burke, said about 290 workers from central Government and the Civil Service were terminated yesterday.

She continued to lament the fact that the union was not being fully informed of the departments being affected by the cuts.

“We have not been given any real concrete information. We know there are going to be clerical people, general workers, clerk typists and steno typists. We have been trying to get details and information and we really have not received anything concrete. We have to wait until people come to us now,” Burke said. (AD)
