Ex-workers in NIS bind

Some retrenched workers from the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) are finding themselves in another pickle.

They have been left unable to claim any National Insurance Scheme (NIS) unemployment benefits due to an anomaly with the BWA and the Statutory Board Pensions Act.

THE NATION reached out to BWA general manager Keithroy Halliday on Monday following reports of an issue involving former workers who had unsuccessfully tried to file for unemployment benefits at the NIS headquarters.

“After consultation with the Ministry of Finance and the NIS, we have been made aware that the BWA is still a part of the Statutory Board Pensions Act, Cap 384, and is therefore treated as if it were a part of Central Government,” Halliday explained. (AD)
