The margin for error is even slimmer now. Barbados’ hopes of getting back into Group I may come down to the luck of the draw following another major Davis Cup revamp that will see the country’s national tennis team playing just one tie next year.

Barbados Tennis Association president Dr Raymond Forde confirmed the news after receiving correspondence from the world body that the format has been condensed from the customary three ties.

“We don’t even have a full understanding of the new format, but what I can say is the ITF contacted us about a month and a half ago telling us that the 2019 Davis Cup competition is going through major changes and the teams won’t know who they’re playing and who’s in the actual groups until the end of February,” Forde explained.

“What we do know is how the new Davis Cup format affects the very top as the teams who qualify for the World Group final will play in a year-end tournament with 16 teams and this first tournament has been awarded to Spain in October, November,” he added. (JM)
