Barbados has lost its most prominent plastic surgeon.
Dr Winston Crookendale passed away at his home Saturday after losing a battle with prostate cancer. His passing marks the end of a decades-long career in which he pioneered reconstructive surgery in Barbados, after he returned to the island in 1981 from Mc Master University in Ontario as a qualified plastic surgeon. He had already completed a Fellowship in General Surgery in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Reflecting on those early years of his career, Crookendale said in a 2015 interview with EASY Magazine, “I came back and every hair lip; every cleft palette, every major burn, every major hand injury, facial injuries-you name it- I am the one doing them all.”
In recent years he had scaled down his work, operating from his surgery on Pine Road and three years ago said he was at “interesting crossroads” where he still enjoyed the job but had become more selective.
Pre-deceased by Kay, his wife of 35 years, the father and grandfather devoted a lot of time in recent years to recreational activities such as hiking, photography and ballroom dancing. (GC)
