Some of The City markets are in for an upgrade.
The Ministry of Small Business, Entrepreneurship and Commerce will be conducting a beautification programme to spruce up the vending spots.
During a tour of the Palmetto Market and Marhill Street Public Market yesterday, Minister Dwight Sutherland said vending was a historic feature of Barbados and a noteworthy contributor to the economy. He said the Bridgetown markets needed a facelift to help elevate the industry.
“The infrastructure is outdated and the place is zestless,” he said after speaking to vendors in Palmetto Market located at High Street.
“People don’t feel encouraged to visit these markets. And to attract tourists to a market like this we need to make it more artful, showing Barbadian culture . . . in an environment where you feel motivated to buy from the vendors.” (SB)
