Barbados could be facing a short-term drought for the next three months and if there is no improvement in the rainfall, it could extend beyond that period.
Meteorologist Brian Murray told the NATION their projections from February through April suggested rainfall could be below the 30-year average.
He explained recent indicators showed rainfall was below average at most of the stations and a weak El Niño in the Pacific Ocean, which prevented hurricanes from forming and getting strong, was also “going to cause drought conditions in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean”.
These were part of the projections Murray prepared with meteorologists Rosalind Blenman and Wayne McGeary for the period November 2018 to April 2019.
The last drought was in 2015 when thousands of residents in the central, eastern and northern parts of the island either experienced prolonged outages or low pressure for several months. (SAT)
