Today is the big day for Aisha Comissiong, Zhane Padmore, Asha Weekes, Nandi Yard, Keisha Dowridge and Shameka Walters.

In January these were the six local dancers who were hand-picked to join the Brooklynettes for Barbados Night, which will be celebrated at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, later tonight.

Through an ongoing collaboration with the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc, (BTMI) a team from the Brooklynettes, the official dancers of the Brooklyn Nets basketball franchise, held auditions in Barbados and they came out on top.

Days ago the excited group left Barbados to attend rehearsals. Dowridge said though they come from a small country, they plan to leave a big impression. “To be quite honest, we are a force to be reckoned with, this is a small island but we have so much to offer,” she said.

Padmore, a long-time dancer said this was a momentous occasion she had been preparing for a while. “To finally reach a milestone in my career of this magnitude . . . . It’s an amazing feel and I am truly thankful to the BTMI for this opportunity,” she said.

Meanwhile Comissiong who was anticipating the moment, predicted that it is going to be “completely insane”.

The dancers are expected to dance to Mikey’s Feting Family.

In past years, Alison Hinds, Nikita and Mahalia have all performed on Barbados Night. (TG)
