The National Conservation Commission (NCC) has launched an investigation into what may be causing sea-bathers difficulty at the popular Pierhead at Pierhead beach just outside Bridgetown.
The commission’s action comes after a second young person drowned at the Bay Street, St Michael beach in less than two weeks.
On Wednesday, 21-year-old Leondre Francis, of Horse Hill, St Joseph, died on arrival at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital after getting into difficulty at the beach, while on May 15, Christina Reid, 13, of Gemswick, St Philip, a student of Springer Memorial, also died.
“We are very concerned that we would have two drownings in such a short space,” NCC general manager Keith Neblett told the NATION yesterday.
“Our head lifeguard, Dave Bascombe, has informed me that there could be under-currents at work in the area, but in the coming days we will be investigating what may be causing these kind of problems, like ripcurrents, or any other things that could put swimmers in danger,” the NCC boss said.
He said the NCC was forced to do the same a few years ago at the extremely popular “Hot Pot” at the end of Brighton Beach after a number of drownings in that area, (BA)
