The University Of The West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill Campus is embarking on a project to accommodate more regional and international students who wish to live on campus.
Announcing the construction of new halls of residence yesterday, principal and pro-vice chancellor Professor Eudine Barriteau said there was a big demand for dorm rooms.
“Every year for the past four years, the demand for dorm rooms exceeded our supply,” she said at the ground-breaking ceremony at the Lazaretto, St Michael.
“On average this excess demand represented 181 rooms per year. So, there is a strong, ongoing demand for student housing at Cave Hill. We have not been able to keep pace with this demand which is on the verge of becoming even greater as we prepare for a further influx of international students, especially from the United States and Africa, to enroll in our highly successful flagship medical programme. So while these dormitories will provide much needed on-campus housing, we are still lagging behind where we should be with regard to student accommodation,” Barriteau said. (SB)
