Two Bajans lead at NACAC Age Group Championships

Barbadian athletes Skye Spencer-Layne and Tia Applewhaite both have narrow leads in their respective divisions of the 2019 North America, Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) Under-13 and Under-15 Age Group Championships in El Salvador.

Spencer-Layne tops the Under-15 girls with 1 147 points, just one ahead of Trinidad and Tobago’s Janae DeGannes. Yusleyni Monterrey of Cuba is third with 1 126 points and Barbadian Brieanna Boyce is sixth with 1 073.

Tia leads the Under-13 girls’ division with 1 711 points and her twin sister Tania is 15th with 1 545. Kaori Robley of Trinidad and Tobago and Dayna Leer of Aruba are second and third, respectively with 1 704 and 1 691 points.

It has been a struggle for the boys.

The highest placed among them is Josiah Parris who is sixth in the Under-15 division with 1 413 points. His partner O’neil Cumberbatch is 18th with 1 196.

Keene John of Trinidad and Tobago is out front with 1 474 points, followed by Nicaragua’s Oliver Guzman (1 454) and Noel Sylvester (1 447) of St Lucia.

In the Under-13 division, Aaron Massiah and Keshawn Griffith are tenth and 11th, respectively with 1 916 and 1 867 points.

All competitors are looking up at Trinidad and Tobago’s Immani Matthew who has 2 140 points. Euan Young of Jamaica is second with 2 105 and St Lucia’s Ishmael Duncan rounds out the current podium places with 2 080.

The combined Under-13 unit won a silver medal in the 4×100 metres mixed relay in a time of 50.77 seconds behind The Bahamas (50.06). The Under-15 team was fifth in 47.87 as Trinidad and Tobago took gold in 46.58 seconds.

The NACAC Age Group Championships take the form of a pentathlon for the Under-13 athletes and a heptathlon for the older competitors.

Those in the Under-13 division compete in the 60-metre dash, high jump, ball throw, long jump and 800 metres, while the heptathlon comprises the 80 metres, long jump, shot put, high jump, 60m hurdles (girls), 80m hurdles (boys), ball throw as well as the 1 000 metres (girls) and 1 200 for boys.
