Bajan Waves

Barbados’ top surfer Chelsea Tuach had the honour of carrying the national flag during the opening ceremony of the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru on Friday night.

Tuach was all smiles in leading the small Bajan contingent at the Estadio Nacional.

Barbados will have representation in 12 sports from 31 athletes and Tuach will step into action tomorrow in surfing’s debut at the Games.

Meanwhile, Matthew Wright finished tenth in the triathlon yesterday. He stayed with the pack through the swim and the ride and even managed to fight his way back into the run before the winner attacked and blew it apart.

“I think it was an all-round really hard race. The swim was tough. Running out and going back in with the surf and stuff and then that hill six times that was very, very brutal,” Wright said.

The event was won by Mexican Crisanto Grajales with Brazil’s Manoel Messias taking the silver and Luciano Taccone grabbing the bronze for Argentina.

No Barbadians will be in action today. (KB)
