Suki two games behind

Sergio Scarpetta 2, Ronald “Suki” King 0. The World Three-Move-Restriction draughts championship match between Barbadian Ronald “Suki” King and Italian title holder Sergio Scarpetta had a dramatic turn at the Grand Salle of the Tom Adams financial Centre last night when the hometown hero surrendered the third game after the time clock ran out on him.

It got worse when King lost the fourth and last game of the day after 30 moves. The compelling third game seemed headed for a draw when King made a misjudgement of the time left and handed the game to Scarpetta.

It was a disappointing end to a game that stretched near two-and-a-half hours, with the opening lines 9-14, 22-18 and 10-15.

A frustrated and tired-looking King told Weekend Sport he had difficulty viewing the time clock but acknowledged that he should have made that complaint earlier to international referee Charles Walker of the United States. (MK)
