Efforts on to revive regional tourism

Talks are underway to start reviving the Caribbean tourism sector amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

But former Caribbean Tourism Organisation secretary-general, Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace, who is involved in the discussions, said it required the establishment of “COVID-free corridors and communities” to ensure a safe environment for tourists and service providers.

It could also not proceed without the support of regional and international health and tourism officials and agencies, and needed “some rapid results testing” to detect cases of the deadly virus, he added.

Vanderpool-Wallace, who is a former minister of tourism of The Bahamas, outlined the plan yesterday during an online webinar hosted by the Inter-American Development’s (IDB) Caribbean Department on the topic, The Caribbean And Coronavirus: Options For Businesses.
