It was the usual crush at The Lester Vaughan School as parents gathered around the gates to see off their young ones who are writing this year’s Barbados Secondary Schools Entrance Examination or Common Entrance.
Some parents, such as Cedric Bannister, recorded the entire affair and stood along the school fence, making sure he did not miss a moment.
What was different this year was the number of parents waiting at the school. Usually several of them waited across from the school gate but by 9 a.m., hardly a soul was to be seen except a group of four under a tree.
One of them, Jefferson Greenidge, said he was remaining more for his own nerves as waiting on his son helped him relax.
Those interviewed said the COVID-19 pandemic had initially thrown a wrench in their children’s study plans, but the online schooling and lessons saw them through and they were confident the children would do well.
Parents also heaped praise on Wills Primary School, which started online classes weeks before the public schools went online and continued through Easter as usual. (CA)
