By monthend, the full complement of workers employed by the JADA Group should be back at work as the construction company recently secured a new contract.
This is according to group human resources manager Peter Lewis, who said they had managed to keep most of their workforce employed despite the challenges facing the construction industry in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
He was responding to claims made by a group of JADA employees over the weekend that a number of workers were still at home, could not access benefits through the National Insurance Scheme (NIS), and subcontractors were being favoured over them. The disgruntled workers have threatened to take industrial action.
“We do have some people who have been on layoff even in excess of 13 weeks
. . . . The NIS agreed to special arrangements that allowed for additional claims and support beyond the traditional 13 weeks in any one calendar year. Unfortunately, we have had to buy into that, because we did not have enough work on resumption on May 4 to put 100 per cent of our workforce back to work,” he said. (RA)
