Tropical wave may bring weekend showers

Barbados may feel the effects of a tropical wave, with occasional showers on Friday night and into Saturday morning.

The Barbados Meteorological Services says it is currently monitoring the wave, with an associated area of low pressure, which is located near 12N 45W or about 950 miles (1 500km) to the east of Barbados.

This feature is presently embedded in the monsoon trough and is maintaining deep convective activity as seen on satellite imagery.

Adequate moisture and marginally favourable environmental conditions over the next few days could result in the slow development of this feature into a tropical depression.

However, numerical model data is predicting that the system will move west-northwestward across the Tropical Atlantic. Based on the current track, this system is expected to pass well north of Barbados on Friday and therefore poses no direct threat to the island.

As the system moves towards the west-northwest, trailing moisture and instability is likely to bring occasional shower activity to the island from Friday night into Saturday morning and residents are advised to monitor official sources for updates over the next few days.

The next update will be at noon on Thursday or sooner if conditions warrant. (PR/SAT)
