A private primary school principal is in favour of keeping the controversial Barbados Secondary School Entrance Examination but with some tweaks.
Head of the St Cyprian’s Boys’ School Dave Layne said that the exam [more commonly called the Common Entrance or 11-Plus] should be spread over two days rather than pressuring the children to sit it in one.
Layne’s view along with the opposing view of his colleague Heather Bryan, principal of People’s Cathedral Primary School, formed part of Voice of Barbados’ Sunday Brass Tacks programme yesterday dealing with private schools versus public schools in the Common Entrance and whether it was time to abolish the screening system.
Minister of Education Santia Bradshaw, prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March, said this year could have been the last for the exam. However, with schools closed and the exam pushed back, doubts surfaced as to whether a suitable replacement would be found in time. (AC)
