Barbados’ unsung heroes in the COVID-19 pandemic will be recognised and lifted up in prayer during this year’s National Independence Service of Thanksgiving, on November 29.

The event, which is being coordinated by the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs at the Wildey Gymnasium, Wildey, St Michael, will start at 10 a.m.

Under the theme: Standing together, renewing hope, the Ministry will seek to highlight frontline and essential workers for their dedication and selflessness during this challenging period.

One of the main highlights will be the lighting of the National Official Candle by the 2021 Commonwealth Caribbean Rhodes Scholar, Barbadian Trey Cumberbatch. There will also be a video presentation by the Theatre Arts students of the Barbados Community College, and the National Pledge will be read by Tyrell Giles of the Barbados National Youth Parliament.

Additionally, there will be a series of readings by representatives of various religious denominations, as well as prayers by representatives of the public health and medical fraternity, the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry, charitable organisations and the Ministry’s departments.

Musical selections will be delivered by the Royal Barbados Police Force and the Assembled

The Ministry put arrangements in place to transport members of the disabled community to the Service, and they are asked to contact Director of the National Disabilities Unit, Wayne Nurse.

Strict COVID-19 protocols will be observed throughout the morning’s proceedings.

Volunteers will be on hand to carry out temperature checks and sanitisation procedures at all entrances.

In addition, attendees will be required to complete an attendance form (providing basic contact information, including name and telephone number) for contact tracing purposes. (BGIS)
