Millicent the magnificent

Millicent Cummins did not miss out on the chance to sing her favourite hymns yesterday.

Barbados’ latest centenarian was treated to a special birthday celebration at her 8th Avenue, New Orleans, St Michael home.

The soft-spoken mother of seven and proud grandmother of more than 20, took the opportunity via Zoom to have some words of inspiration with her church colleagues and sang along to a few hymns, before returning her attention at home for her two daughters to sing Happy Birthday.

Gittens, who spent most of her career plying her trade at the Bridgetown Fish Market, was a workaholic deep into her 90s, only calling it a day five years ago.

The sprightly centenarian still enjoys the occasional chicken and chips, but loves her ground provisions.
