Veteran waste hauler Anderson Cherry, who five years ago ran a Pink Bin recycling programme, has expressed disappointment that his project has come to an abrupt end.
While he did not say if he had tendered for the soon-to-be-rolled- out automated waste management joint venture between the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) and Prosource Ltd, he indicated it was the end of the road for his project.
When asked what would become of his bin project since Prosource was supplying each household with a free 65-gallon roll-out cart for general waste and an 18-gallon bin for recycling, Cherry said: “I am saddened that despite my 30 plus years’ experience in the waste management space, a functioning Pink Bin pilot programme boasting in excess of 11 000 recycling customers, that my career-long dream to place a garbage and recycling bin in every Barbadian household has now come to an abrupt end.
“I want to thank our customers in communities such as Inch Cape, Gibbons Terrace, Atlantic Shores, Welches Grove, Ruby, Apple Grove Development, Prior Park, Clermont and others for partnering with us for the last five years and proving that recycling with kerbside collection can work.”
He added: “I would like to congratulate the SSA for finally making the decision to start a kerbside recycling programme and I also want to congratulate the construction company that was awarded the contract.”
Cherry did not say what would become of his bins and his pink garbage collection trucks which were also the first on the island with lifting carts. (MB)
