For Ekins Bowen of Checker Hall, St Lucy, the long story on his house is ending on a happy note.
Since July last year, his friend Mitch Blackman has been working to build the 69-year-old a new home after Tropical Storm Tomas damaged it in 2010.
“He lives alone and the condition of the house was one where no one should be living under. I operate my business nearby and when I saw how he was living, I had to help,” said Blackman.
The contractor said the finished home was a collaboration of multiple entities, both governmental and non-governmental, adding he was proud how corporate Barbados responded.
On Friday the house was officially handed over to Bowen, who had been living in an apartment in the meantime.
“I’m very happy to be back on the spot where I was born. I want to thank Mr Blackman and his associates and partners for what they have done. He told me when it was done I would have the prettiest house in Checker Hall and now I do,” he said with a smile.
Blackman said it had been a bit tough as they had to negotiate with neighbours to allow a path as well as deal with delays surrounding COVID-19 lockdowns and ash fall. They persevered with the grace of God, said Blackman.
“It took longer than I thought it would and it was a constant fight, but now the neighbours have a road and Ekins has a new house. There’s still a few things unfinished but the house is ready to be lived in,” he said. (CA)
