Sobers first up for Barbados

Alex Sobers will be the first Barbadian to taste competition at the Tokyo Olympics when he makes a splash in the 400 metres freestyle today at 6:44 a.m. local time.

The 22-year-old Sobers is almost certain to find it tough as he goes into Heat 2 with the slowest time of any of the eight swimmers. His time is a modest three minutes, 53.19 seconds, nowhere near what is required to compete with the world’s best.

The swimmer with the fastest time in this heat is Alfonso Mestre of Venezuela, who has clocked 3:49.16.

The race will take place at 7:44 p.m. at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre with Japan 13 hours ahead of Barbados.
