Stoddard breaks record

Rising swimming star Adara Stoddard signed off the National Long Course Championships in grand style on Sunday at the Aquatic Centre, when she broke a 16-year-old record on the eve of her 16th birthday.

Swimming in the colours of High Tide, the Christ Church Foundation School Student smashed the 15-17 girls’ 100 metres breastroke with a time of one minute, 17.71 seconds, bettering the 1 min, 18.09 seconds set by Alexis Jordan 16 years ago, with clubmate Amelia Mayers placing second in 1:25.85.

Stoddard, who barely missed qualifying for international meets on three previous occasions, seemed totally focused on the battle with the clock and dominated the race.

She ended the meet with five gold medals and one bronze to be the 15-17 girls’ champion. (KB)
