Barbados will have the golden chance to return to World Group 1 of the Davis Cup tennis competition next year having now advanced to the play-off stage after Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Indonesia in an historic tie on home soil.
Several results over the weekend went in favour of the Bajans, with Tunisia defeating Dominican Republic 3-2 and Thailand thrashing Denmark 4-1 to give Barbados automatic qualification to play for a spot among the big boys in February or March 2022.
Barbados will be joined by Mexico and Poland. the draw is set for December, but Barbados ranked 54, could feature against the likes of South Africa, Poland and Slovenia in the next round.
“We now have the opportunity to get back to group 1 and this is a fantastic thing for the guys. It will be a tough set of matches of course but I am sure that our team will be up for the challenge,” vice-president of the Barbados Tennis Association, Junior King told NATION SPORT yesterday. (AGB)
