Government’s wages and salaries bill has increased by $11 million halfway through its financial year.

The $374.4 million in pay packets by the end of September included $7.5 million for people in temporary posts like the COVID-19 Monitoring Unit and Department of Public Affairs, but the Ministry of Finance says the overall expenditure was $6.3 million less than budgeted for.

The money spent on wages and salaries, as outlined in Government’s Mid-Year Budget Review Report April to September 2021, was part of an overall $168 million increase in expenditure when compared with the same period last year.

“Wages and salaries totalled $374.4 million at the end of September, $11 million above outlays in the corresponding period of 2020,” the report stated.

“This included $7.5 million increase in the Other Personal Emoluments category, which involves remuneration payable for a number of temporary Government posts taken up over the period including persons within the COVID-19 management unit as well as Public Affairs. (SC)
