Coach wants ease for karate

Government must critically review its current ban on contact sports, especially martial arts, if those disciplines are to continue their much-needed development.

This is the view of head coach of the national men’s karate team Cameron King after karatekas Sheridan Greaves and Kodie King competed at the 2021 Pan American Karate Federation’s (PKF) Senior Championships in Punta del Este, Uruguay, last month.

While the head coach acknowledged the current global crisis and its impact on the extended sporting fraternity, he said the authorities must analyse each sport on its merit and propose protocols that will not hamper the development of the sport while keeping athletes in a safe and healthy environment.

“One major impact we have faced from the pandemic is the ban on training. I have no problem with banning competition here in Barbados, but we can train without being close and that is how we trained prior to the Championships,” King told Sun Sport. (NM)
