The Barbados Alliance to End Homelessness is calling for an integrated approach to deal with homeless people, especially those with mental health challenges.
A frustrated Kemar Saffrey, president of the alliance, made the plea yesterday after the story of a couple with mental challenges, who have been living on the streets for the past two years, was highlighted.
Saffrey, who held a press conference to discuss the situation, said the alliance had been providing 19-year-old Amaris Gittens and Enrique Marshall, 22, with food, shelter, counselling and access to medical care, even trying to get them into a skills training programme.
He suggested the couple were sleeping on the streets because they wanted to be together since men and women had to sleep in separate dorms at the shelter in The City. (MB)
