Tridents show fight

A brave Barbadian performance, which featured two successful spot kicks from Thierry Gale, was not enough to prevent the men’s football team falling to a 5-2 defeat away to the Dominican Republic on Monday night in their 2023/2024 Concacaf Nations League group game at the Estadio Cibao.

Kicking off two hours later than scheduled due to adverse weather conditions, a hat-trick of headers for the hosts’ leading scorer Dorny Romero was the centrepiece of the Dominican Republic’s attacking mettle, especially after having to come back from a goal down early on.

Gale put the Bajans ahead from the spot in the 10th minute but subsequent goals in either half from Riki Alba and Heinz Mörschel confirmed Los Quisqueyanos’ second straight five-goal performance against the Tridents, who have now lost four consecutive games while conceding 18 goals.

However, Dominican Republic were sloppy with their tackling on two occasions at the back and conceded penalties, the second of which was dispatched by Gale midway through the second half. (NM)
