The Barbados Royals Girls Cricket Club has announced the commencement of its inaugural season which is slated to begin on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at the Friendship Playing Field, Hothersall Turning, St. Michael.
The first-ever grassroots girls club in Barbados, which welcomes participants between the ages of 6 and 14, is offering free membership.
On Tuesdays, sessions run from 4:00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. for six to ten-year-olds. On Fridays, it is from 4:00 until 5:30 p.m. for 11-14-year-olds and on Saturdays, the schedule runs from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. for all age groups.
Having launched in December, the Barbados Royals Girls Cricket Club garnered attention and admiration from cricket royalty such as Hayley Mathews, Mike Gatting as well as key sporting figures like Alex Jordan, Stacy Ann King, and the esteemed Minister of Sport Charles Griffith.
Club President Roland Butcher expressed his anticipation for the upcoming season, saying “I am genuinely excited to witness the energy and enthusiasm that these young girls will bring to our first sessions. Consistent participation is key to maximising the benefits of our training sessions. We encourage parents and guardians to actively support their daughters, ensuring they come equipped with the essentials – a water bottle, sneakers, and most importantly, a smile.”
This groundbreaking initiative receives co-funding from the CPL franchise, the Barbados Royals, and the UK-based cricket-for-social-change charity, Bat For a Chance.
The club is under the leadership of Dr. Sasha Sutherland, the Executive Director of the Caribbean Regional Anti Doping Organization, who serves as the chair of the advisory board.
