A MAN in his early 20s was hospitalised after being shot several times while walking in Bridgetown yesterday evening.

Police reported that around 3:45 p.m., the victim was in St Michael’s Row in the company of a female friend when a masked man approached him and started shooting.

He was treated at the scene by ambulance personnel and then transported to hospital where he was said to be in stable condition.

Police cordoned off the area and diverted traffic from the crime scene, which resulted in some businesses and street vendors along the usually bustling street shutting shop earlier than usual.

Some people who were present expressed shock at the shooting occurring at a time where scores of pedestrians and schoolchildren were in the area.

A customer who was inside a nearby store recalled hearing the gunfire.

“It happened so fast and we were honestly left in shock because you’re not expecting something like this to happen,” she said.

Police are asking anyone who can provide any information on the incident to call the Criminal Investigations Department Central at 430-7189 or 7190, police emergency 211, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIPS (8477) or the nearest police station. (JRN)
