Motorists in Barbados are being urged to plan ahead as the annual “Walk for a Cure” breast cancer awareness event, hosted by the Barbados Cancer Society, takes place on Sunday.

The event will see participants walking along the Barrow section of the ABC Highway, prompting a series of road closures and traffic diversions from 2:30 pm until 7:00 pm.

The Barbados Police Service has confirmed that the Barrow section of the ABC Highway, stretching from the Everton Weekes Roundabout in Warrens to the Clyde Walcott Roundabout at Hothersal Turning, will be closed during the event.

The stretch from the Everton Weekes Roundabout to the Darcy Scott Roundabout near Chefette Warrens will also be inaccessible to motorists.

Drivers traveling from the Norman Niles Roundabout in Haggatt Hall towards the Clyde Walcott Roundabout will be diverted to either Waterford Boulevard or Codrington Road, with options to continue onto Bush Hall Main Road or proceed towards the Spooners Hill/Codrington junction.

Those heading north wishing to rejoin the Ronald Mapp Highway will be directed along White Hall Main Road and Prior Park Road to return to Redman Village.

Additional diversions will affect motorists along the Cummins section of the Highway traveling from Cave Hill towards Warrens, who will be required to turn at either Lodge Road or Clermont West Road. Access to KFC from the Warrens access road will remain via Lodge Hill Roundabout, but a left turn at the small roundabout near the restaurant will be enforced. Drivers from the northern part of the island seeking to rejoin the ABC Highway can follow an alternative route through Cost U Less Roundabout, Arthur Seat, Edghill Roundabout, Cane Garden, Jackson Main Road, Lears Road, and Belle before returning to the highway at Norman Niles Roundabout.

Police have reminded the public that anyone who fails to comply with traffic directions from uniformed officers may be liable to a fine of $500 or three months’ imprisonment. Exemptions apply only to emergency vehicles and official vehicles of the Police, Defence Force, and Fire Service.

The Barbados Police Service will deploy officers along the affected routes to assist with traffic management. (PR)
