No constituency in Barbados managed to turn out 50 per cent of the registered voters for the February 11 General Election which was won 30-0 by the Barbados Labour Party.
According to statistics released by the Electoral and Boundaries Commission (EBC) today, 273 947 people, comprising 131 293 men and 142 654 women were eligible to vote. However, 57.8 per cent of Barbadians chose to remain outside the process. There were 115 619 votes cast, of which 498 were spoilt.
The highest voter turnout was in St John at 47.72 per cent. Of the 9 339 voters, 4 457 went to the polls, of which there were 4 439 valid ballots. This seat was retained by Charles Griffith.
St Philip West was second with 47.14 per cent of 11 537 registered voters. Figures show 5 438 people voted, of which there were 15 spoils. This riding was retained by Kay McConney.
In third place was St Lucy, retained by Peter Phillips with 46.25 per cent of the voters. A total of 9 580 people are registered for that constituency, with 4 431 going to the polls, accounting for 4 408 valid votes.
The constituency of St Michael North East, won by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley was fourth with 45.90 per cent of people voting. With 8 869 registered voters, 4 071 went to the polls, of which there were 14 spoils.
Rounding out the Top Five was St George North, won by Toni Moore. With 9 624 registered voters, 45.38 per cent or 4 367 voters went to the polls, with 4 341 valid votes.
The lowest turnout – 36.97 per cent – was in Christ Church West, which returned Dr William Duguid. Of the 8 506 registered voters, only 3 145 exercised the franchise, accounting for 3 125 valid votes.
