The Breast Screening Programme of the Barbados Cancer Society and its partner, CIBC Caribbean, have condemned violence that occurred during the annual Walk for the Cure on Sunday.
In a statement issued Monday, the organisers described the behaviour as unacceptable and said it had no place at an event dedicated to supporting people affected by breast cancer.
The Walk brings thousands of people together each year to raise awareness about breast cancer, support survivors and those living with the disease, and remember those who have died from it.
“The safety of everyone who takes part in the Walk is our first priority,” the organisers said.
They said they would review the incidents and the Walk overall as more information becomes available, while continuing to work with the Barbados Police Service, CIBC Caribbean and other stakeholders to improve safety at future events.
“Violence will never be allowed to triumph over the good work of the Breast Screening Programme of the Barbados Cancer Society, the spirit of joy and collaboration among the organisers, supporters and sponsors of this important event,” the statement said.
The organisers thanked the thousands of people who attended and supported the event “in the true spirit of the Walk” and expressed their hope for the successful recovery of those injured.
“We will continue to give Hope! To Help those affected with the disease and pray for Healing for all!”
