Flash-flood watch issued for Barbados

The Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a flash-flood watch as an area of instability south of the island is expected to contribute to further rainfall.

The watch was issued at 7:30 a.m. today and is scheduled to be updated at noon, or sooner if conditions warrant.

The BMS said an upper-level trough, combined with saturated soils from recent rainfall, could result in further accumulations of between one and two inches of rain, potentially causing flooding in low-lying areas.

Barbados received more than 25 millimetres of rainfall over the previous 24 hours, and pockets of moderate to heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to continue.

Possible impacts include soil erosion, water settling on roads and fields, commuting delays, isolated road diversions, rising water levels in ponds and other water bodies, and debris being carried in fast-moving water.

A flash-flood watch means that rapid flooding is possible, generally within two hours of heavy or excessive rainfall, but does not mean flooding will necessarily occur.

The public is advised to monitor updates from the Barbados Meteorological Services, the Department of Emergency Management and the Government Information Service, and to follow guidance issued by the emergency management authorities.
