SIXTH FORM STUDENTS of The Lodge School came in for high praise last weekend, when they joined forces with the Diabetes Association of Barbados in its Keep the Culture, Cut the Fat campaign.

The year-long campaign introduces healthier versions of some of the foods most enjoyed by Barbadians. During January and February, the campaign promoted healthier recipes for macaroni pie and chocolate coffee cupcake.

Last Saturday, the focus was on breakfast considerations, and the public got the chance to sample recipes prepared by Lodge School students as part of their CAPE Home Economics programme. On display at Cost-U-Less Supermarket, Welches, St Thomas, were “grab and go” breakfast muffins, low fat pumpkin muffins and low fat coconut bread, which all got the thumbs-up from shoppers who even requested recipes.

Members of the public are invited to join the campaign by creating healthier alternatives to the recipe of the month. Winning entries receive a $50 voucher for fruits and vegetables at the Diabetes Association’s monthly Market Day; free membership in the Association for one year; and the publication of the winning recipe in the Association’s cookbook.

The focus will be on beverages during April.  Further information may be obtained by visiting the Association’s Facebook Page at https://www.facebook.com/dab1975. (BGIS)
