Island Constables cry unfair wages

ISLAND CONSTABLES (IC) working for $8 an hour are still fighting for an increase two years after asking for a review.

The National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), which has taken up the battle, says the rate is not even on par with a Government general worker.

In addition ICs, the manpower backup to the Royal Barbados Police Force, especially during mass events, want vacation leave, bus passes, uniform allowances and employment status as an attachment to the force.

“This is frustrating. We work and get $8 an hour since 1998 and no recognition. This is not fair. We don’t even make as much as a Government security guard and we go out on patrol with the police and work alongside them,” said one of the ICs.
