THE UNIVERSITY of the West Indies (UWI) is, and will continue to be, a global institution and will not be “ghettoised”.
Principal of the Cave Hill Campus, Sir Hilary Beckles, said guard had to be taken against those with insular and parochial ways of thinking as the role of the university was to reflect its people and ensure they never lost perspective.
“We are the most global people in the world, we are not a parochial people; this was not how this region was built. We are not insular in the concept of nationalism and so when people say we should not name our sports complex after Usain Bolt, it is a contradiction of who we are and that’s why we must stand our ground . . . .”
