PAYDAY could soon be coming for the island’s sugar cane farmers.

But it looks like another late start for the sugar harvest as an industry official calls for a restart to reaping in January.

Just like last year, the harvest is projected to begin in March as the head of the Barbados Sugar Industries Ltd, Patrick Bethell, reported that millions of dollars owed to cane farmers for the 2014 crop “had been received in Barbados”.

Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler was quoted in another section of the Press, on Tuesday, as saying that sugar cane farmers would be paid this week.

Yesterday an official at Portvale, the island’s lone sugar factory, said, “Everybody will be ready when they get the money.” (HLE)
