PARKINSON MEMORIAL will celebrate its 54th anniversary this year from February 22 to March 1 with several activities.

Principal Jeff Broomes told THE NATION they will start the week with a church service at the Sanctuary Empowerment Centre on February 22, but the main event will be the Day of Excellence on February 26.

This year, the focus will be on drama.

“A lot of outstanding dramatists have come from this school – Victor Clifford, Earl Warner, Dorsie Boyce, Alf Padmore – a whole group of them,” Broomes said.

“It takes on greater significance now when Mr Clifford, who is not only an old scholar but a teacher at the school, received a national honour from the Governor General.”

Last November, Clifford received a Barbados Service Medal for his “outstanding dedication to the growth of the theatre arts both in Barbados and the Caribbean”.

The concert featuring (right) Ashawyna Bellamy and Friends will include performances from Pinelands Creative Workshop. (FP)

On that day, Old Scholars are also being encouraged to wear the school tie to work.

Other activities include: a Quiz on February 23 on the history of the school; a Healthy Lifestyles seminar co-ordinated by the school’s Guidance Counsellor on February 25; a sleep over on February 28, followed by a Fun Walk from the Pine, St Michael School to Browne’s Beach the following morning (SAT)
