PUT AN EFFECTIVE cybersecurity system in place as a matter of urgency, or expose Barbados’ efforts to develop a knowledge-based economy to serious risk.
That’s the warning to Government from an information systems security expert, who also advised that such a move should be treated as a matter of national security, in the same way that some developed countries have done.
This advice comes from Charles Walton, president of the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA) Barbados Chapter, in the wake of an increase of confirmed incidents of hacking of websites of various businesses and some Government departments over the last two years, including the VAT Office in 2012, as well as an ATM breach by two Bulgarians, who stole nearly $500 000.
