The Barbados Water Authority (BWA) has embarked on a multimillion-dollar project to slash its annual $24 million electricity bill while at the same time mitigating the effect of power outages at its pumping stations.
Minister of Energy and Water Resources Wilfred Abrahams told the DAILY NATION that photovoltaic systems (PVS) were being installed at pumping stations across the island to improve on the BWA’s ability to supply water to the nation, especially in times of power outages.
Up to last Sunday, a power outage in the north affected a number of BWA pumping stations, including Alleynedale, Half Acre, Lamberts, Ashton Hall, Whim, Haymans, Warleigh, Lancaster, Apes Hill, Ozone, Haggatts, Carlton, Mt. Stepney and Prospect. Residents were without water for a number of hours.
Last month, thousands of residents from as far as Battaleys, St Peter, to Sargeant’s Village, Christ Church, in the South, also complained of water woes as a result of some electrical issues. (SB)
