Same-sex turmoil

Many of today’s children are being confused by their parents who are in same-sex relationships or who have multiple partners.

This is the view of deputy director of the Child Care Board, Denise Nurse, who said children were now dealing with a multiplicity of problems and were acting up at school.

“Family is now man and man. Family is woman and woman. Family has changed. Family is no longer man and wife anymore so children are coming to school confused,” she said, adding children were also no longer going to church but were “going all other places”.

Nurse was participating in a panel discussion on domestic violence and its effect on children, hosted by the Mothers’ Union of Barbados, at the George Lamming Primary School on Saturday evening.

The deputy director, who said she preferred the “hands on” approach to social work, said they dealt with a number of cases at the department where “a lot of children are exposed to all types of relationships”.
