Across the island, Barbadians from all over are hard at work in the fields digging up yams, potatoes, carrots and eddoes as well as picking peas.
It is Christmas time and food is a big part of any Bajan Christmas so people are out in their numbers gathering it either for their own tables or to sell to others.
A major pea-picking place is the Belle plantation, where people were picking peas with prejudice from as early as 5 a.m. Green peas and rice is a local Christmas tradition so it was time for the enterprising to cash in.
One of them is Eulene Atherley, who leaves her Cambridge, St Joseph home to head into the Belle. She said she also went as far as St Philip hunting for peas.
“I do this every year. Where the peas are, you have to go. I left this morning around 5 a.m. and people were already in the ground when I arrived.”
