International chess returns today when the Barbados Chess Federation’s annual Heroes Day Cup pushes off at Divi Southwinds Beach Resort, St Lawrence.

Three overseas International Masters, headed by Cuban Humberto Blanco, will join three top local players in vying for a top prize of US$800 in the Masters section of the tournament.

Blanco, who finished second in last year’s event, is the top seed with a FIDE (World Chess Federation) rating of 2456. He is joined by fellow International Masters, Venezuelans Oscar Zavarce (2353) and Ariel Marichal Gonzalez (2319).

The local charge will be in the hands of six-time national champion Martyn Del Castilho (2244), fellow FIDE Master Justin Blackman (2208) and International Master Terry Farley (2196). (BCF)
