No divide on same-sex issue, says Marshall

THE parliamentary group of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) has not seen the controversial gender-neutral draft legislation on domestic violence trumpeted by a party spokesman.

This was revealed by St Joseph MP Dale Marshall yesterday. He insisted that having not seen the document, “in no way can it be said that the parliamentary group supports any legislation which seeks to recognise in law same-sex relationships”.

Three weeks ago at the conclusion of the BLP’s annual conference, Senator Wilfred Abrahams announced at a news conference that the party had drafted a new domestic violence bill, which would capture those in “non-heterosexual relationships”.

He added that while the proposal was ready to be tabled in the Senate, the BLP would be debuting it publicly in a series of town hall meetings.

The announcement has led to lots of public debate and outcry in some quarters. On Sunday, Minister of the Environment and Drainage, Dr Denis Lowe, vowed to resign his post before he ever co-signed gender-neutral legislation. (MB)
