BAY PRIMARY have started a foray into the sport of golf thanks to a combination between the Optimist Club of Bridgetown and the Barbados Golf Association.
Both entities presented yesterday a number of beginner golf equipment as the BGA launched its SNAG – starting new at golf – in a bid to get primary schoolchildren utilising their developing skills at the sport and hopeful unearthing some new talent.
President of the Optimist Club, Darshani Workman indicated that they have recognised that most cricketers like to play golf and with National Hero Sir Garfield Sobers being a golf enthusiast as well as a former pupil of Bay Primary, they considered it fitting to launch the pilot programme at Bay Primary.
Principal Marielon Gamble welcomed the $5 000 worth of equipment and her school being used for the pilot programme.
“At this age the children are filled with energy and this contribution gives them the chance to use that energy in another sport and to hopefully discover other talents,” said Gamble.
Over three dozen of the children then thoroughly enjoyed themselves as they were carried through the rudiments of the sport by qualified coaches and BGA president Cally Boyea. (KB)
