LONDON – West Indies captain Jason Holder unveiled a cracking half-century on limited overs debut for Northamptonshire but it was not enough to prevent a 72-run defeat to Durham, in the opening round of matches in the One-Day Cup, yesterday.

Asked to chase a difficult 343 at Chester-le-Street, the visitors folded for 270 in the 44th over, with Holder stroking a handsome 86 off 68 deliveries.

Northants were struggling on 61 for three in the 11th over after new-ball seamer Matt Salisbury (3-51) struck telling early blows but the revival started when captain Alex Wakely (66) added 74 for the fourth wicket with wicketkeeper Adam Rossington (43).

The 27-year-old Holder arrived to dominate an 89-run, fifth-wicket stand with Wakely, injecting further urgency into the run chase.

He struck eight fours and two sixes, reaching his first half-century for Northants at a run-aball, before opening his shoulders to strike some lusty blows.

Once Wakely fell, however, the target become more difficult and Holder eventually perished to a catch in the deep off debutant 19-year-old left-arm spinner Liam Trevaskis in the 42nd over. (CMC)
