Remove murder from ‘bail list’

WITH an increase ​in gun crime resulting ​in the death of a number of victims, a Government minister is calling for ​a re-examination of the Bail Act with a view to removing murder from the schedule of offences that are bailable.

​Minister of Transport and Works and parliamentary representative of St Philip North Michael Lashley made the suggestion during the launch of the Grassfield/Duncans Neighbourhood Watch in St Philip over the weekend.

​It came following remarks by Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Eucklyn Thompson, who said a worrying factor in the increase in crime in Barbados was the use of firearms.

Lashley, an attorney at law, said that as a citizen, he also had concerns about the level of crime in Barbados among the young people and reports that some people charged with murder were released on bail.
